Marinara Sauce
In the mid-16th century, Neapolitans developed marinara sauce. This was due to Spain occupying the kingdom of Naples in the 16th century and introducing the tomato to Italy. Marinara sauce literally means “sailor style” sauce. This sauce gets its name because it was originally developed by cooks aboard ships in Naples. The sauce was made for long sea voyages since it was easy to make, did not include meat, and the tomatoes prevented it from spoiling. It was a great way to preserve tomatoes even without refrigerators. It was also used to flavor fish and other foods.
Any person can make his own easy homemade marinara sauce with just the basic ingredients. Tomato, garlic, olive oil, onion, and herbs make up traditional Italian marinara sauce. However, other ingredients can be added and there are many different marinara sauce recipes, each unique and delicious. Therefore, a best marinara sauce recipe does not exist. Marinara sauce can be used as a topping for many dishes and foods. Pasta, spaghetti, seafood, chicken, veal, pork, eggplant, macaroni, rice, and pizza are tasty when marinara sauce is used to flavor them. Marinara sauce is made in many restaurants and by many chefs. One dish called spaghetti alla marinara (“sailor style spaghetti”) includes seafood such as shellfish and may or may not contain marinara sauce. This is because sometimes, the word marinara can also refer to a seafood dish. Basic Italian tomato sauce can also be called salsa al pomodoro.
